Meaning of Hilary: the cheerful one: beautiful meaning to a beautiful name. But to me, this name means more than “cheer”. It also means kindness, love, and friendship.

When I moved to Jamaica, I was hoping – perhaps expecting – to meet new, interesting people, with different life experiences and, therefore, different viewpoints to share.  And life was kind to me, as it usually is, giving me just that – a new circle of acquaintances, that are quickly becoming friends, making Jamaica feel like home to me.

However, in the midst of these wonderful people, there she was: Hilary. We met in a “blind date”, and by the time that date was over, we knew that friendship was meant to be.

Hilary came into my life to take a place I didn’t know was vacant. She took a big piece of my heart and made it even bigger. Her joy became my joy, as it happens when you truly care for someone. I ached with her sorrows and rejoiced with her happiness, and she shared my emotions with the same passion – and compassion.

Hilary taught me to love in a way I hadn’t experienced before.  To fully trust and care for someone, regardless whether the future will keep us together, and to love, simply love, regardless of distance and conditions. My old ways of shielding myself and giving only as much as I receive were radically challenged. Hillary kept giving and trusting, until that barrier was broken. And then, she smoothly walked in.

Today, my friend lives far away. Too far. But her smile still lightens up our world. The changes she made in me are here to stay. She is here to stay. I am happy to know that she is content in her native country. But I wish she were here just for now. I wish I could give her a birthday hug and show her just how loved and appreciated she is.
